Nintendo, after revealing the New Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo Wii at their E3 2009 press conference said that online play won’t be featured in New Super Mario Bros.

The New Super Mario Bros game allows 4 players to play simultaneously which take on the role of – Mario, Luigi, and two Toads.

There are classic trappings such as coins, warp pipes, etc. which require cooperative play. The game can be played in single player mode, or two, or three, or four. When there are four players, there is a lot more stuff in the game.

One player can pickup and carry other players and vice versa. The game also has a tally at the end with bonus points, ranking, coins, etc.

Apparently, the new game won’t feature online play because the game uses up all of the Wii’s processing power and cannot do more than that, and hitting the processing limits of a console is something that all developers go all out to do.

The processing limitations are a continuous problem that developers have been trying to deal with since the 8-bit era and continue to deal with in the current times too. – Slashweb

  1. I refuse to believe that Wii can’t handle online play for New Super Mario Bros.

How the heck can the DS, comparable to the N64 in power, handle an online four player full 3-D First Person Shooter, a full 3-D four person cart racer, while the Wii, a home console slightly more powerful than the original XBox can’t handle online multiplayer in a 2-D Super Mario platformer.

I love Nintendo, I slept out on the sidewalk TWICE in front of Nintendo world, once for E3, and once to meet Miyamoto, and even skipped my SAT to do it, but come on.
